THE WATER METER
A water meter is a device that measures the volume of water delivered to a property. Every resident should know where their home’s water meter is located. Water meters, owned and maintained by Waterworks, are located in a small meter box in the ground near the street or edge of the property. The water meter box will have a metal or plastic lid and may be marked, “Water Meter.” This box is typically locked and accessible to Waterworks personnel only!
WATERWORKS ADVISES CUSTOMERS – DO NOT OPEN THE METER BOX! DOING SO COULD DAMAGE THE ELECTRONICS IN THE BOX – CUSTOMERS WILL INCUR A CHARGE FOR ANY DAMAGES TO THE METER AND/OR METER BOX![
LOCATING THE WATER METER
Every resident should know where their home’s water meter is located. Water meters are typically located in the front or side of a property, even with a faucet. Your water main begins at the street and heads in a straight line to your home.
Go to the street and look for a water hydrant. (There is a hydrant every 1100 feet, so it should be easy to locate one.) Water Hydrants are good reference points because they are on the main water line.
Next, find the spigot on the street side of your home.
Your meter and valve should be somewhere in that area. The water meter box will have a metal or plastic lid and may be marked, “Water Meter.”
You are responsible for making sure your water meter is accessible and free of obstructions such as overgrown vegetation, gravel and parked vehicles. Please maintain safe and direct access to your water meter.
